About this Content
Aims
To provide early on-site vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) for patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in the emergency department
Background
Patients with BPPV face delays in treatment, which can lead to prolonged recovery and functional impairments. This project sought to provide early access to physiotherapy for better outcomes.
Methods
On-site VRT was introduced in the emergency department (ED) to provide early access to physiotherapy, reducing waiting times and improving treatment outcomes
Results
Successful BPPV resolution rates were higher in the ED-VRT group (80.3%) compared to the OP-VRT group (60%); patients required fewer treatment sessions and had shorter treatment duration
Conclusion
Providing early access to physiotherapy can improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on outpatient services, with potential applications for other acute conditions
Lessons Learnt
Providing early intervention through on-site VRT improved patient outcomes and resource utilization in the ED
