Conclusion
The results demonstrated a substantial 18% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, amounting to a total reduction of 17.949 metric tons, as at September 2023. Whilst the target was not fully achieved, PEH remains committed to reducing biohazard waste. To institutionalise improved practices, prevent regression and ensure consistency, ongoing efforts include raising awareness among staff and closely monitoring proper disposal practices to ensure the safety of patients and the environment. Continuing education is the key to success.
Lessons Learnt
Continuing education is essential for success, particularly through Infection Control talks for all hospital staff and discussions on proper biohazard waste segregation. Raising awareness can be achieved through bimonthly roll call slides and by orientating new staff and clinic nurses to ensure appropriate waste segregation. Additionally, monthly monitoring of total biohazard waste bins generated over the next 6 months is crucial for measuring success. This highlights that continuous efforts in education, clear goals, and accurate data are vital for sustained improvement and effective biohazard waste reduction.
Additional Information
Expansion initiatives are aimed at extending the correct process to other IHH SG Hospitals that have not yet implemented this new approach
