Evaluate the effectiveness of early screening and intervention on psychosocial outcomes in children with cancer and their parents.
Background
Early psychosocial distress affects children with cancer and their families; interventions can improve coping and functioning.
Methods
Conducted psychosocial screenings quarterly in the first year, offering interventions to distressed children and parents.
Results
31% of retrospective group parents reported distress vs. 4% of prospective group; no differences in HRQoL for children.
Conclusion
Early psychosocial screening effectively reduces parental distress, though more targeted child support is needed.
Lessons Learnt
Psychosocial needs include coping with tiredness, school difficulties, caregiver stress, and financial/social challenges.
