About this Content
Aims
To train and utilise optometrists as physician extenders to manage stable eye conditions in SPEC. Free up appointment slots for new or urgent cases and allow ophthalmologists more time to manage complicated eye diseases.
Background
A proportion (30%) of eye clinic patients have stable eye conditions requiring observation and minimal intervention. SPEC was initiated to manage these patients and reduce eye clinic lead time.
Methods
Training & Accreditation Program, referral guidelines, patient satisfaction survey, and doctor satisfaction survey.
Results
71.7% of SPEC patients managed in SPEC. 27.8% reduction in eye clinic lead time. Manpower cost savings of $65,731.80 annually. Patient satisfaction score: 4.56/5. Doctor satisfaction score: 4.97/5.
Conclusion
SPEC is safe, effective, and cost-lowering, improving resource utilization while maintaining high patient and doctor satisfaction.
