About this Content
Aims
To strengthen the capabilities of ENs through the 3As approach in eLearning design to reskill and upskill them to full practice aligned with SNBs 2023 guideline by early 2026.
Background
ENs in Yishun Health (YH) have not been authorized to practice 12 common nursing skills fully upon SNB registration. The 2023 SNB guideline includes 7 additional generic skills for ENs, which are untaught to the existing ENs. An effective, efficient, and cost-effective educational approach coupled with policy review is necessary to address the gap and prepare all ENs in YH for full practice aligned with SNBs guideline by 2026.
Methods
The 3As (Activate, Augment & Advance Self-regulation) approach was adopted in the design of a 2-tiered self-directed eLearning Reskilling Programme. This program includes compulsory completion of eLearn contents, theoretical and skills assessments, flexible and autonomous pacing, and regular tracking and updates of completion status. It aims to influence self-regulatory mechanisms that support self-regulated learning in contextualized clinical settings.
Results
Since June 2023, 3As-based strategies have been implemented in the eLearn 2-tiered Reskilling Programme to influence self-regulation of 270 ENs in YH by early 2026. The program has shown positive outcomes with a high percentage of ENs feeling confident and better prepared for work expectations and rating their online learning experience as very good to excellent.
Conclusion
The 3As approach effectively prepares ENs for full practice by early 2026 in a cost-effective way without interfering with daily operational needs. It uplifts ENs capabilities and competitiveness in the worldwide open learning resource ecosystem.
Lessons Learnt
The process of activating, augmenting, and advancing self-regulation fosters intrinsic motivation through autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The program has been challenging but fulfilling for ENs, helping them refresh their knowledge and skills.
