About this Content
Aims
The aim of the project is to reduce the incidence of phlebitis in patients with Visual Infusion Phlebitis Score (VIPS) 2 in Medical-Surgical Ward 4A & 4B at Parkway East Hospital (PEH)by implementing improved catheter care protocols, enhancing nurse training, and introducing regular monitoring and early intervention systems.
Background
The number of patients with VIPS > 2 increased significantly from January 2022 to May2024, negatively impacting patient care by prolonging hospital stays, extending therapy durations, increasing nurse responsibilities, and putting patients at risk for further health complications.
Methods
The project involved a comprehensive assessment of the issue through data collection from patient records, surveys, interviews with healthcare staff, literature review, and root cause analysis. A multi-faceted plan was developed focusing on improving catheter care practices, enhancing staff training, and increasing patient education. The project was conducted in Medical-Surgical Ward 4A & 4B at PEH from July 2024 to September 2024.
Results
After implementing the changes, the number of patients with VIPS > 2 decreased by 40%.The intervention led to productivity gains by reducing nurse workload and streamlining handover processes. It also proved cost-effective, lowering healthcare costs due to reduced hospital stays and fewer complications.
Conclusion
The successful implementation of the project in Medical-Surgical Ward 4A & 4B has led to the spread of these practices to other wards and hospitals within the IHHSG network. Theintervention is financially sustainable and cost-effective for long-term continuity.
Lessons Learnt
Regular monitoring of IV sites is crucial in preventing phlebitis. Comprehensive education and training for healthcare professionals significantly increase compliance with IV cannula care protocols. Educating patients and their families about IV cannula care raises awareness about phlebitis and empowers them to participate in their care.
