Aims
Address barriers to assistive technology (AT) usage in higher education by improving accessibility to AT devices and services.
Background
AT usage was hindered by lack of awareness, training, and inefficiencies in centralized service delivery.
Methods
Implemented hub-and-spoke model with satellite AT loan libraries in 8 institutions; conducted regular training for SEN support officers and peer helpers.
Results
Increased device loans by 311%; trained 32 SEN staff; enhanced awareness among students and staff in institutes of higher learning.
Conclusion
The project significantly increased AT accessibility and service delivery; plans for scaling include hospital settings to broaden support for assistive technologies.
Lessons Learnt
Regular training and addressing demand for advanced AT devices is crucial. Enhanced service delivery requires commitment to improving skills and resources.
