Aims
To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of same-day discharge after unilateral mastectomy at NUH breast surgery by December 2023.
Background
Traditionally, mastectomy required inpatient stays of at least one night. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a need for outpatient management due to bed shortages.
Methods
Implemented workflow for patient selection, counseling, and readiness assessment. Ensured multidisciplinary coordination, patient education, and teleconsults post-discharge.
Results
Achieved a 63% success rate for same-day discharge with no reported post-op complications or readmissions. Inpatient reviews completed for all cases.
Conclusion
Demonstrated the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of same-day discharge for mastectomy, with potential for application in other surgeries.
Lessons Learnt
Effective communication, proper workflow design, and adherence to ERAS principles are key for successful same-day discharge implementation.
Additional Information
Further expansion to other surgical disciplines and continuous monitoring of outcomes.
