About this Content
Aims
Reduce Total Turnaround Time (TAT) from registration to discharge for cataract operations.
Background
Pre-RIE TAT for cataract surgery under local anesthesia averaged 6 hours, driven by inefficiencies in pre-op and discharge processes.
Methods
Used Value Stream Mapping, Root Cause Analysis, Lean tools, and Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs) to identify and eliminate workflow inefficiencies.
Results
Achieved a 25% reduction in TAT (from 6 hours to 4.5 hours for the 50th percentile); 24% increase in caseload within existing resources.
Conclusion
Workflow streamlining significantly improved efficiency, reduced delays, and optimized resource use.
Lessons Learnt
Standardized workflows, periodic stakeholder reviews, and Lean methodologies sustain efficiency improvements and enhance outcomes.
