About this Content
Aims
Improve blood transfusion practices and reduce transfusion rates for TKR, THR, and Spinal Fusion surgeries to align with set benchmarks.
Background
Blood transfusions during major orthopaedic surgeries presented an opportunity for quality improvement to enhance patient outcomes and reduce risks.
Methods
Addressed preoperative anemia with Hb optimization, implemented intraoperative blood loss management, and enforced evidence-based transfusion protocols.
Results
Transfusion rates significantly improved: TKR (98.4%), THR (89.4%), and Spinal Fusion (100%), exceeding pre-set benchmarks and enhancing patient safety.
Conclusion
The new patient blood management program is sustainable and applicable across surgical disciplines.
Lessons Learnt
Proactive management of anemia and effective blood loss monitoring are critical to minimizing transfusion dependence during surgeries.
