About this Content
Aims
Reduce the preoperative fasting ≥15 hours for patient undergoing emergency orthopaedics (P3b) surgery in NTFGH from 31% to 5% by Mar 2024.
Background
Between November 2022 and April 2023, patients undergoing emergency surgery for P3b orthopaedics cases experienced a median of 31% of preoperative fasting ≥15 hours in NTFGH. P3b refers to a surgery triage system indicating time to surgery within 24 hours.
Methods
Nurses were empowered to make decisions and allow feeds to patients when surgeries were delayed or postponed based on verbal orders from the physician, rather than waiting for a formal entry in the system. The process of patient care for surgeries between inpatient and operating theatre was streamlined to enhance nurse satisfaction and operational efficiencies.
Results
The improved workflow led to increased patient satisfaction and fewer complaints.
Conclusion
The intervention shows promise in reducing preoperative fasting times and improving overall patient care and satisfaction.
Lessons Learnt
1. Nurses were empowered to make decision and allow feeds to patient when surgeries were delayed or postponed based on verbal order from the physician, rather than waiting for a formal entry in epic.
2. The streamlined process of patient care for surgeries between inpatient and operating theatre enhanced both nurse satisfaction and operational efficiencies.
3. The improved workflow leads to increased patient satisfaction and fewer complaints.
Additional Information
The initiative contributes to workplace/patient safety, patient experience, innovation and productivity, and sustainability.
