About this Content
Aims
To reduce and manage the number of biohazard waste bins usage and improve environmental sustainability in healthcare settings.
Background
Parkway East Hospital experienced a significant increase in biohazard waste bins from2018 to 2022, surpassing the national growth rate. This increase posed challenges to waste management and environmental sustainability.
Methods
The project utilized the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle to implement changes. Department heads were informed about biohazard waste classification, and visual guides were shared to improve staff understanding and compliance.
Results
The project led to a 22% reduction in biohazard waste bins and costs from 2023 to 2024, with a decrease in CO2 emissions by 17.949 metric tons. Despite a 6% increase in wastebins in 2023, the initiatives proved effective.
Conclusion
The project successfully reduced biohazard waste and costs, contributing to environmental sustainability and aligning with IHH's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Lessons Learnt
Staff awareness and education on safe biohazard waste management are effective strategies. Continuous efforts are essential to maintain gains, and clear goals, accurate data, and effective strategies are crucial for ongoing improvement.
