About this Content
Aims
To empower residents by involving them in decision-making processes and improving their quality of life through active participation in meaningful activities.
Background
Before the RC was established, residents lacked a platform to give meaningful feedback, affecting activity participation and communication of nursing needs. The introduction of the RC boosted community engagement and empowered residents with decision-making, enhancing their sense of belonging, physical and psychosocial well-being, and improving resident care.
Methods
The RC engages nursing home residents in decisions impacting their daily lives and well-being. Regular meetings with leaders from nursing, programmes, physiotherapy, facilities, and catering departments allow residents to voice opinions and provide feedback for improving Quality of Life (QoL).
Results
Following implementation, residents' QoL and psychosocial wellbeing have noticeably improved. Participation rates increased from less than 5 activities per month before implementation to more than 5 activities per month.
The scale of this project will increase when the system is implemented in a new nursing home slated for completion in 2026.
Conclusion
The RC has successfully empowered residents, improved their quality of life, and fostered a supportive community through active participation and decision-making.
Lessons Learnt
Empowerment and active participation of residents lead to improved engagement and quality of life. However, challenges include high turnover in committee members and finding coherent, willing replacements.
