Aims
To streamline and reduce the turnaround time of nursing home (NH) applications
Background
There were long waiting times for NH placements. The project focused on reducing application turnaround time and improving workflow with the input of multiple stakeholders.
Methods
Implemented a Value Stream Mapping (VSM) approach to streamline NH application processes and improve communication between various healthcare and nursing home staff
Results
By redesigning the NH application process and eliminating unnecessary steps, average wait times for NH placements were reduced by 70%, and the rework rate for applications fell from 95% to 2%
Conclusion
Reduction in NH placement wait time led to a reduction in 25,000 bed days and an estimated cost avoidance of $25 million annually
Lessons Learnt
Open communication, stakeholder involvement, and constant feedback led to significant process improvements and reduced patient wait times
