About this Content
Aims
Align local practices with international guidelines, achieve sustainable practice and financial savings.
Background
Global deviation exists in breathing circuit replacement cycles; NUH aimed to align practice with international guidelines, reducing usage and environmental impact.
Methods
Implemented bacterial/viral filters and adopted a weekly change policy to replace daily circuit use. Conducted multidisciplinary collaboration and shared sessions.
Results
Reduced annual breathing circuit usage by 80% (~5800 circuits saved), achieving $46,400 cost savings and 11,600 kg CO2e reduction.
Conclusion
Successfully aligned NUH practices with international guidelines, proving safety and sustainability of reduced usage.
Lessons Learnt
Weekly breathing circuit change is sustainable and safe, reducing both costs and environmental impact.
