About this Content
Aims
To decrease the number of patients with diabetes-related conditions admitted inpatient and staying for less than 48 hours from 1st February 2023 to 30th September 2023, and to increase the utilisation of EDTU Hyperglycaemia and Hypoglycaemia protocols during the same period
Background
Patients with diabetes-related conditions account for a significant proportion of hospitaladmissions. A survey identified low awareness among staff about protocols and alternatives to inpatient admissions
Methods
Interventions included departmental teaching, collaboration with diabetic nurse educators, and developing alternatives to inpatient admissions. Changes were implemented in stages from February to September 2023
Results
The number of short-stay admissions was significantly reduced, and the utilisation of protocols increased. The project avoided 1425 inpatient admissions, saving an estimated$2,147,475
Conclusion
The project successfully reduced short-stay admissions and increased protocol utilisation, demonstrating significant cost savings and improved patient care
Lessons Learnt
Right siting admitted diabetics requires a multi-pronged approach. Strong support from diabetic nurse educators and endocrinologists is crucial. Data on patient and staff experiences should be collected
Additional Information
The project is specific to Sengkang General Hospital's Emergency Department but has been shared with other departments for potential adoption
