About this Content
Aims
The programme aimed to provide volunteer opportunities for higher functioning seniors from Senior Care Centres (SCC) and Nursing Homes (NH), for them to partner with youth volunteers, and facilitate fun activities for other seniors. It also aimed to achieve at least 80% of senior volunteers feeling a sense of satisfaction, confidence in assisting, and interest in future volunteering.
Background
Higher functioning seniors at both SCCs and NHs are not sufficiently challenged by the activities conducted as they are often catered to meet the needs of clients of varying abilities. This results in under-stimulation and boredom among higher functioning seniors.
Methods
The programme involved a 1970s-80s themed carnival as the event platform for senior volunteers. Participants were assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), fast gait speed (10-Metre Walk Test), and handgrip strength. Physiotherapists conducted assessments, while Therapy Assistants (TAs) carried out prescribed interventions.
Results
93% of senior volunteers felt a sense of satisfaction, 100% felt confident to assist or facilitate more than one station, and 100% expressed interest in future volunteering. Significant gains were observed in fast gait speed and handgrip strength.
Conclusion
The initiative successfully engaged higher functioning seniors in meaningful volunteer activities, fostering intergenerational bonding and improving their confidence and satisfaction.
Lessons Learnt
Providing volunteer opportunities boosts self-esteem and gives seniors a sense of satisfaction and purpose, enhancing their quality of life.
