About this Content
Aims
The aims of the initiative are to promote social engagement, build positive self-identity and resilience, and instill a sense of belonging and reintegration in community living for female seniors in residential care.
Background
The initiative, Colour Me Beautiful (CMB), was designed to address social isolation among female seniors in residential care, particularly those in Christalite Methodist Home (CMH), who are classified as homeless or vulnerable due to poor or no familial support.
Methods
The CMB pilot was conducted with 9 female residents with a mean age of 77, using a 6-week, evidence-informed groupwork approach. The impact was measured using quantitative tools (Mood and Energy, Rosenberg self-esteem scale) and a qualitative survey.
Results
The results showed overall improvements in mood and energy, sense of belonging, and contribution. Participants were active and spontaneous in sharing their feelings, with significant camaraderie and positive responses to sensory stimulations.
Conclusion
CMB is a promising initiative that can be manualised for regular and independent implementation. It has the potential to be adapted for male beneficiaries to achieve similar outcomes.
Lessons Learnt
The pilot highlighted the importance of post-activity reflections to elicit better participant responses and sustain transformative changes. It also identified the need for gender-specific adaptations due to the gender-segregation policy and low female-male ratio in the sheltered home.
