Aims
Empowering seniors to become volunteer befrienders by leveraging their experiences to build meaningful connections with socially isolated or frail peers through home visits and outreach.
Background
This neighbourhood -based befriending initiative is launched by Care Corner Active Ageing Centre (Toa Payoh 261A) in Aug 2023.
Methods
Active Ageing Centre staff, social workers, community partners and senior volunteers conduct home visits for senior at-risk, promoting active ageing, social engagement and purposeful in the community.
Results
This initiative increased sense of purpose, boosted emotional well-being and built a culture of neighbourliness.
Conclusion
A sense of purpose among senior volunteers empowers them to build meaningful connections with seniors by leveraging their experiences and able to bond with one another through various community activities.
Lessons Learnt
When meaningful connections are built and community participation increases, this allow active ageing for seniors and prevent the possibility of mental or health issues. Caregiver fatigue can also be alleviated.
