About this Content
Aims
The NKF Kidney Screening Programme aims to raise awareness of kidney health and enhance community access by integrating kidney function checks into routine medical care. It focuses on early identification of at-risk individuals and providing them with targeted interventions and treatment.
Background
Singapore ranks 5th globally for kidney failure incidence and 4th for prevalence. Approximately 500,000 may already be living with the disease, and more than 9,000 dialysis patients are in Singapore. Over $300 million is spent annually on dialysis.
Methods
The initiative involves integrating kidney function checks into routine medical care, making kidney screening more accessible and convenient for at-risk populations, and creating pathways for timely medical evaluation, lifestyle support, and treatment.
Results
Since March 2024, 3,572 individuals have undergone Serum Creatinine and Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio (UACR) tests at participating clinics. The screening detected 517 individuals who may have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and require further evaluation.
Conclusion
The NKF Kidney Screening Programme has successfully integrated kidney health checks into routine medical services, enabling early intervention and management of risk factors to prevent and delay the progression of CKD.
Lessons Learnt
The initiative has helped identify individuals at-risk of kidney disease and enabled early intervention by reducing barriers to screening, particularly those related to awareness and financial access.
