Aims
To improve communication by helping healthcare workers (HCWs) communicate effectively with patients using layman terms.
Background
Patients struggle to understand medical jargon, affecting their ability to make informed decisions and partner in care.
Methods
Developed a glossary of 150 simplified medical terms in collaboration with patients and HCWs; used in training and education programs.
Results
Over 1,700 nurses and HCWs trained; glossary made available online, improving communication and patient engagement.
Conclusion
The Plain English Glossary empowered patients and HCWs, fostering better communication and trust in care delivery.
Lessons Learnt
Engaging patients and HCWs in co-creating solutions builds trust and ensures relevancy.
