About this Content
Aims
The aim of the project is to address the inefficiencies and risks associated with the manual transcription of patient care information from medical records by implementing an automated solution that interfaces with Epic, CMIS, and RTLS systems to provide real-time, clear, and concise patient information.
Background
The project was initiated to improve patient safety and workflow efficiency in acute inpatient wards by eliminating manual transcription errors and reducing the administrative burden on nurses.
Methods
The project involved the development and implementation of the Patient Information Board (PIB) system, which integrates with existing hospital systems to automatically display patient demographic and clinical data. The implementation was carried out in multiple phases across different wards, with continuous feedback and improvements.
Results
The implementation of the PIB system led to significant improvements, including a 100% reduction in administrative time spent updating patient information, elimination of transcription errors, and saving of 12,000 nursing hours per year. The system is scalable and designed for long-term sustainability.
Conclusion
The PIB system effectively addressed the issue of manual transcription errors, improving patient safety and workflow efficiency. The structured implementation strategy ensured smooth adoption and sustainability of the system.
Lessons Learnt
Key lessons include the importance of ensuring hospital wireless network coverage, designing flexible solutions for scalability, and allowing more time for testing and system validation. Continuous monitoring and user support are essential for sustained efficiency.
