Aims
To upskill Portering Attendants into Healthcare Chaperones (Basic Care Assistants) to address workforce shortages and ensure patient care continuity.
Background
Rising inpatient bed demand and projected nursing manpower shortages necessitated role re-design. BCAs were trained to perform basic care, freeing nurses for clinical tasks.
Methods
Designed a curriculum, engaged unions, provided skills-based training, and organized practicum sessions. Feedback loops ensured continuous improvement.
Results
39 staff re-designated as BCAs. 117 patient compliments were received. Two BCAs achieved WSQ Higher Certificates and advanced to Healthcare Assistants.
Conclusion
Workforce transformation relieved nurses of basic care duties, improving workforce efficiency and patient experience.
Lessons Learnt
Management support, stakeholder collaboration, and team-based approaches reduced resistance to change.
