About this Content
Aims
The aim of the project is to optimize haemodynamic transducer levelling in the ICU to enhance efficiency by addressing inefficiencies associated with the existing process.
Background
The project was implemented in the Intensive Care Unit of Gleneagles Hospital, focusing on improving the process of haemodynamic transducer levelling, which was previously time-consuming and cumbersome.
Methods
The project used a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) approach to develop, pilot, refine, and implement a laser leveller to replace the existing Tygon tubing method. The methodology included audits, time-motion studies, staff surveys, and iterative design improvements based on feedback.
Results
The intervention reduced levelling time by 74.8%, from 147 seconds to 37 seconds, and improved staff satisfaction, with over 95% positive feedback. The project demonstrated sustained improvements in efficiency and workflow.
Conclusion
The laser leveller innovation is a future-ready solution that enhances workforce productivity and patient care while addressing operational inefficiencies. It is scalable and adaptable to other institutions.
Lessons Learnt
Early stakeholder engagement, iterative design, and comprehensive training were crucial for usability and adoption. Simplifying processes improved staff satisfaction and workflow efficiency. Broader pilot testing and structured communication could have accelerated adoption.
