About this Content
Aims
To reduce average waiting time for patients who had undergone Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) at Cardiovascular Centre (CVC).
Background
The long waiting times stem from ward RNs unable to fetch patients from CVC promptly dueto commitment in the patients’ care in the wards and cardiologists were unable to ordertelemetry promptly due to patient care.
Methods
Root cause analysis using a cause and effects diagram (fishbone diagram) was conducted.Interventions included post PCI training for ward cardiology wards with a 'train the trainer'program for new enrolled nurses and standardizing telemetry orders to be done withcoronary procedures prior to CVC.
Results
The average waiting times for nurse to fetch and telemetry order post PCI reduced from 77to 25 minutes. Coronary angiogram per day increased from 8 to 12 patients and PCI per dayfrom 6 to 8 patients.
Conclusion
Reducing patients’ wait time in CVC allows faster turnaround time in CVC to accommodatemore patients. There will be more efficient treatment plans for patients.
Lessons Learnt
Empowering enrolled nurses and increasing their capacity allows them to take on tasksfrom RN, increasing their job satisfaction. RN can focus on complex care in the wards.
Additional Information
1. Total of 557 sample size was collected. 100% of enrolled nurses (n=21) in both ward B65 &B66 were competent to transfer patients post PCI after structured training session. Nonegative feedbacks received from patients post PCI. 2.The One Improvement Festival 2025 (Category C - Developing a Resilient & Sustainable Workforce) – Top 15 Finalists
