Aims
To optimize the usage of expired consumables in NCID and ensure they are diverted away from landfills.
Background
There is a large amount of expired consumables discarded as general waste, contributing to the fast-filling landfill in Singapore. By 2050, climate change is likely to cause significant health and economic impacts.
Methods
The project involved a series of steps including gap analysis, solution approach, and rapid experiments such as the implementation of a monthly dashboard and miniseries in-service talks.
Results
Expired consumables diverted increased from 46% to 86%. Active participation from nurses was noted.
Conclusion
The project successfully increased the diversion of expired consumables from landfills and engaged healthcare staff in sustainability efforts.
Lessons Learnt
Initial rapid experiments were poorly received, highlighting the importance of understanding different personas and building trust to ensure buy-in.
