Aims
To allow triage-trained nurses to administer nebuliser therapy independently and evaluate its impact on door-to-treatment time.
Background
Asthma patients with acute exacerbations often faced delays in emergency treatment due to workflow inefficiencies.
Methods
Developed and trialed a protocol for triage nurses to assess and order nebulisation, including competency checklists and supervised cases.
Results
Door-to-treatment time reduced significantly, with 80% of post-intervention patients receiving treatment within 10 minutes (from 3%).
Conclusion
The protocol improved time to treatment and care quality for patients with acute asthma exacerbations.
Lessons Learnt
Sustained training and reinforcement are crucial for maintaining compliance and extending the protocol to other workflows.
