About this Content
Aims
The aim is to reduce inpatient CAUTI rate to 2.7 per 1000 catheter days by Dec 2023.
Background
The CAUTI rate at Jurong Community Hospital was 5.86 per 1,000 patient days in 2020. Through a nursing-led quality improvement effort, it was reduced to 3.48 in 2021. The target was to reduce the rate to below the national average of 2.20 for community hospitals.
Methods
A multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach was adopted, involving doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. SIPOC mapping was used to identify the need for timely catheter removal to prevent infections.
Results
The CAUTI rate was reduced from 5.86 to 3.48 per 1,000 patient days. Achieved a median compliance rate of weekly IDC round and post TOC protocol ranging from 90% to 95%.
Conclusion
The MDT approach is essential for reducing CAUTI rates by implementing measures to reduce unnecessary catheter use, maintain catheter care, and ensure prompt removal of catheters.
Lessons Learnt
The MDT approach highlighted the value of each team member's input in patient-centered care. Work standardization helps in developing fundamental changes and achieving improvement.
