About this Content
Aims
To provide opportunities for patients to be involved in meaningful engagement to improve wellbeing while in hospital through leisure activities.
Background
St Luke's Hospital recognized that patients were confined to bed for most of their hospital stay and needed meaningful engagement beyond therapy sessions. Leisure activities can enhance wellbeing and provide a sense of belonging and empowerment.
Methods
The hospital introduced a Leisure Programme with a schedule of activities, gathered feedback from patients and staff, and used tools like WhatsApp for referrals. They also provided leisure trolleys and updated ward tablets with leisure applications.
Results
In FY2023, 1148 unique inpatients participated in the Leisure Programme, with 638 group and 616 individual sessions. Top activities included art and craft, reading, Bingo, music appreciation, and dance. There was a mean improvement of 1.2 in VAMS score and a 23.2% improvement in wellbeing.
Conclusion
The Leisure Programme is valuable for enhancing patient services and should be continued. Training more volunteers is essential for sustainability.
Lessons Learnt
Leisure activities play an important role in patient wellbeing and mood. The programme's success relies on volunteer involvement and adapting to constraints like COVID-19 restrictions.
