Aims
Reduce unconsumed and expired non-standard AU consumables to $0. Identify gaps in the current process and redesign roles, processes, and responsibilities.
Background
Overstocking occurred as planning was based on full OT operating capacity (18 rooms), but only 11 rooms were in use.
Methods
Reviewed inventory management using Fishbone diagram, developed guidelines for ordering, monitored consumption monthly, and standardised terminology.
Results
Reduced unconsumed non-standard consumables from $101,620 to $672; wastage eliminated post-intervention.
Conclusion
Improved inventory management reduced wastage, achieving $0 expired consumables for the anaesthesia unit.
Lessons Learnt
Sharing improvement methods with other disciplines requires customization based on consumable differences.
