About this Content
Aims
Enable self-expression and meaningful interactions through sensory engagement, facilitate reminiscence and connection with cultural identity, and increase arousal and attention based on sensory and cognitive needs.
Background
HERE Together was developed as a multidisciplinary approach by the Psychosocial Services Department. The program integrates psychosocial, sensory, and spiritual components to enhance quality of life for non-verbally communicative or bedbound persons.
Methods
Sessions were structured with familiar rituals, music, and sensory materials. Observations were recorded using the modified Music Therapy Assessment Tool for Awareness in Disorders of Consciousness scale.
Results
98% of families, staff, and volunteers reported satisfaction. Residents showed increased arousal, non-verbal behaviors, and meaningful interactions. Families felt more connected and empowered to continue engagement.
Conclusion
Sustainability relies on continued training of facilitators, expanding sensory interventions, and refining engagement methods to meet residents’ evolving needs.
Lessons Learnt
A multi-sensory approach fosters meaningful connections. Tailoring interventions to individual capacities enhances engagement and overall well-being.
