About this Content
Aims
To implement an electronic care pathway for TKR surgery, improving compliance, reducing LOS, and lowering costs.
Background
Variation in TKR care practices led to inconsistent outcomes and higher costs.
Methods
Standardized TKR care pathways, introduced Best Practice Advisory prompts, and trained staff in Epic documentation.
Results
Improved mean CQI from 63% to 79%; reduced mean consumable costs by 20%; decreased LOS cases above 5 days by 47.8%.
Conclusion
The project demonstrated that pathway standardization drives quality improvements and cost reductions.
Lessons Learnt
Standardization improves outcomes; strong multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for sustained change.
Additional Information
National Healthcare Innovation Award for Care Redesign (2018); the pathway serves as a model for other surgical specialties.
