NTFGH’s inpatient CMI for orthopaedics was among the lowest compared to other hospitals, indicating potential inefficiencies.
Methods
Retrospective review of DRG coding, root cause analysis, and educational initiatives for clinical documentation accuracy.
Results
CMI improved to a record high in CY2019, increasing from 1.77 to 2.18; an estimated additional subvention of $78,000 was achieved.
Conclusion
The project demonstrated significant improvements in financial subvention and patient care metrics through systematic enhancements.
Lessons Learnt
Clear communication, consistent education, and senior staff involvement are key to improving clinical documentation and DRG coding.

National Healthcare Innovation Award for Casemix Index improvement; plans to replicate efforts in other departments.
