About this Content
Aims
Ensure the right meal is served safely and correctly to residents, serve meals in a timely manner, and provide nutritious meals following the International Dysphagia Diets Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework.
Background
Lentor Health MacPherson Nursing Home started in August 2023. Establishing a standardized meal service routine was identified as crucial for new staff unfamiliar with local nursing practices.
Methods
The project used the A3 thinking framework and Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology to improve food distribution. A Chef Partnership Programme was integrated for menu planning, food preparation, and cooking methods. Simulation exercises helped refine workflows and job instructions for new staff.
Results
No choking incidents have occurred. Meals are served correctly and meal preparation to completion time has been reduced to 45-60 minutes.
Conclusion
Sustainability involves improving staff adoption through training posters, gathering feedback for process refinement, and optimizing workflow using Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) in meal distribution.
Lessons Learnt
Standardized work processes help new staff integrate into ward routines efficiently and ensure job ownership among staff.
