About this Content
Aims
To reduce the incidence of diaper dermatitis among neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Gleneagles Hospital to zero cases within 6 months.
Background
Diaper dermatitis is a common issue in neonates, particularly in NICUs, where preterm infants and those with sensitive skin have increased risk. The discomfort and complications associated with diaper dermatitis can prolong hospital stays, increase costs, and elevate parental anxiety.
Methods
The NICU team developed a revised workflow and implemented changes including frequent monitoring, alternative cleaning methods, application of zinc oxide cream, and introduction of a revised diaper dermatitis score chart.
Results
Improved care quality through early detection and prevention, alignment of staff skills with updated guidelines, and continuous monitoring to maintain and enhance the outcomes of the project.
Conclusion
The intervention shows promise for improving patient care by reducing the incidence of diaper dermatitis among neonates.
Lessons Learnt
Identification of areas of knowledge and skill deficit and staff competency is key to improved quality nursing care. Frequent checking of diapers can prevent diaper dermatitis.
