About this Content
Aims
Reduce patient falls by 75% by the end of 2023, ensuring 100% user participation of SmartPeep for high fall-risk patients.
Background
With Singapore's aging population, Parkway East Hospital observed an increase in falls among elderly patients, rising from 0.4 to 1.3 per 1000 patient days in 2022. Falls resulted in extended hospital stays and financial stress for patients and families.
Methods
The falls prevention task force explored solutions, selecting SmartPeep, an AI-based optical sensor system. The system predicts patient movement intent and alerts nurses before a fall occurs. It categorizes patients by fall risk and provides early warnings through a central monitoring system.
Results
Falls dropped to zero under SmartPeep monitoring from July to December 2023. The system improved staff responsiveness, reducing near-miss falls and enhancing patient outcomes and staff morale.
Conclusion
SmartPeep significantly reduces falls and improves patient safety. Future efforts will focus on wider adoption and refining predictive accuracy.
Lessons Learnt
Effective communication is crucial to gaining patient consent for SmartPeep. Re-counseling is done for high fall-risk patients who initially decline system use.
