About this Content
Aims
Adopt a humanoid robot for group therapy exercises for elderly patients/clients.
Background
Group therapy exercises faced manpower challenges, and elderly patients, especially those with cognitive impairments, had difficulty following instructions.
Methods
Implemented the UBTECH Alpha 1E humanoid robot as a group therapy instructor to lead and assist patients during exercises.
Results
Reduced the need for therapy aides by one per session, freeing up staff for other tasks. Increased patient engagement, particularly for those with cognitive impairments.
Conclusion
The humanoid robot improved efficiency and engagement, and its use can be expanded to other settings, with positive feedback from patients and staff.
Lessons Learnt
Staff buy-in, troubleshooting, and adapting work processes for the robot’s limitations were critical. The robot’s audio performance required adjustments for effective use.
