About this Content
Aims
To investigate if group speech treatment via telerehabilitation achieves similar outcomes to face-to-face delivery for Parkinson's Disease.
Background
Hypokinetic dysarthria in Parkinson’s Disease can benefit from therapy like LSVT LOUD, but group sessions face logistical barriers that telerehabilitation can address.
Methods
Participants with Parkinson's Disease received either telerehabilitation (TR) or face-to-face (FTF) group speech treatment. Speech and voice assessments were conducted pre- and post-treatment.
Results
Both groups showed significant improvements in speech outcomes (p < 0.05). TR participants appreciated the convenience but faced initial challenges using Zoom. FTF participants enjoyed in-person interaction.
Conclusion
Telerehabilitation is a viable and effective alternative for group speech therapy, yielding comparable results to in-person sessions.
Lessons Learnt
The pandemic created an opportunity to trial and normalize telerehabilitation, which was effective but required onboarding for technology use.
