Aims
To improve patient movement into the Acute Medical Unit. Increase patients transferred within 4 hours (target: 60%).
Background
Prolonged EMD stay delays definitive management. Goal to reduce bed wait time to <4 hours for 60% of patients.
Methods
Root cause analysis identified bottlenecks. Interventions included PDSA cycles to reallocate beds and improve processes.
Results
Patients transferred within 4 hours increased from 39.3% to 78.6%. Earlier care reduced overall length of stay (LOS).
Conclusion
Reduced bed wait time, earlier investigations, better definitive care, reduced LOS saving bed days.
Lessons Learnt
Streamlined bed allocation and clarified staff responsibilities improved patient flow.
