About this Content
Aims
Evaluate the effectiveness of e-learning in improving nurses’ competency in administering the water swallow test (WST).
Background
WST was traditionally taught one-on-one by speech therapists, leading to inefficiencies and inconsistencies in training.
Methods
Introduced an e-learning module for WST theory, combined with practical sessions; compared outcomes of e-learning vs traditional classroom-based training.
Results
56% of the e-learning group passed practical assessments in ≤3 sessions vs 86% in the traditional group; lack of demonstrations cited as a limitation.
Conclusion
E-learning improves accessibility and consistency but requires supplementary hands-on training for competency.
Lessons Learnt
E-learning alone does not adequately ensure competency; a blended approach with demonstration and interaction is crucial.
Additional Information
Advocated for refining blended learning approaches in healthcare.
