About this Content
Aims
Enhance the psychosocial well-being of residents at St. Andrew’s Nursing Home, Queenstown (SANHQ), particularly in response to the negative impact of COVID-19 visitation restrictions.
Background
Based on the last survey from the Residents’ Satisfaction Survey (NHRSS), nursing home residents desired more opportunities for social and recreational engagement, which became more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods
SANHQ participated in the WSP initiative by AIC. Staff training was conducted in two tiers: Tier 1 for structured activities and Tier 2 as a train-the-trainers program. Staff received guidance from nurse leaders and occupational therapists, overcoming language barriers and lack of confidence. A structured group activity program was implemented for each ward.
Results
Residents now participate in recreational activities twice a week, in addition to volunteer and Rehabilitation Department-led activities. Popular activities include birthday celebrations, art and craft sessions, memory games, drumming, and adaptive sports. Staff observed improved resident engagement and morale.
Conclusion
Sustaining the program involves training new champions each month and handing over learning resources to Nurse Managers when staff leave.
Lessons Learnt
With training and support, care staff reported greater job satisfaction when empowered to plan and lead group activities, enhancing the quality of care.
