About this Content
Aims
Reduce inpatient emergency surgery admissions by ensuring that 80% of selected surgical patients are discharged home within 24 hours.
Background
Acute surgical conditions account for a large portion of hospital admissions, contributing to high bed occupancy. ACES was designed to provide safe, same-day discharge for selected emergency surgical patients.
Methods
Established a dedicated ACES workflow, integrating early senior clinician reviews and standardized discharge protocols with post-discharge follow-up.
Results
94.4% of ACES patients were discharged home, reducing hospital bed stays by an estimated 150 bed-days. Patient satisfaction improved, and total cost savings reached SGD $104,000.
Conclusion
The ACES model has successfully reduced hospital stays and costs. Future plans include expanding its coverage to additional surgical conditions.
Lessons Learnt
Implementing a structured ambulatory surgical model reduces inpatient admissions, enhances efficiency, and is adaptable for broader healthcare applications.
