About this Content
Aims
The aim of the project is to improve the efficiency of locating anaesthesia equipment in the operating theatre by implementing a QR code tracking system.
Background
The project was initiated due to inefficiencies in locating anaesthesia equipment, which caused delays and workflow disruptions in the operating theatre. Traditional methods were inefficient, leading to increased stress and potential risks to patient safety.
Methods
The project involved implementing a QR code tracking system for anaesthesia equipment. This included placing QR codes on equipment, creating a centralized digital system for real-time updates, and training staff on the new system. The project followed a structured plan with pre- and post-intervention data collection.
Results
The implementation of the QR code system improved the first-attempt success rate for locating equipment from 30% to 65% and reduced the median retrieval time from 5.5 minutes to 3 minutes. This enhanced workflow efficiency and reduced operating theatre delays.
Conclusion
The QR code tracking system significantly improved equipment retrieval efficiency, reduced delays, and enhanced patient safety. It is a sustainable and scalable solution for long-term implementation.
Lessons Learnt
Effective communication and staff engagement are crucial for adoption. Simplicity in solutions enhances usability. Earlier integration of all relevant equipment could have optimized efficiency more quickly.
Additional Information
The project aligns with environmental sustainability goals by reducing paper waste and optimizing resource utilization. It also promotes health equity by ensuring timely interventions for all patients.
