About this Content
Aims
Evaluate the effectiveness, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of parent coaching via telerehabilitation compared to standard in-clinic interventions for children with autism.
Background
Autism prevalence is rising globally, with 1 in 100 children affected in Singapore. Telerehabilitation can enhance intervention accessibility, reducing costs and logistical barriers.
Methods
A parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted from January 2019 to May 2023. Inclusion criteria: children aged 15-48 months with autism. Parents were coached via Zoom sessions using a structured intervention model.
Results
Telerehabilitation showed comparable efficacy to standard care in improving adaptive behavior and early learning composite scores. Cost reduction of 48.8% in total program costs and 30.4% in healthcare system costs was observed.
Conclusion
Hybrid models combining telerehabilitation and in-person care may optimize early autism interventions. Policy adaptation can enhance cost-effective service delivery.
Lessons Learnt
Telerehabilitation offers significant cost savings while maintaining comparable outcomes. Parents reported high satisfaction despite some feasibility challenges.
