About this Content
Aims
Evaluate the direct economic cost of outpatient prosthetic care and rehabilitation for amputee patients in Singapore.
Background
Amputations due to diabetes and other complications impose significant economic burdens on individuals and society.
Methods
Retrospective study analyzing outpatient costs for 31 patients with transfemoral or transtibial amputations over one year post-operation.
Results
Average total outpatient cost was SGD 4,306.70, including SGD 2,737 out-of-pocket expenses; 48% of patients required financial assistance.
Conclusion
Expanding funding models is essential to ensure financial accessibility for amputee rehabilitation and mobility restoration.
Lessons Learnt
Financial subsidies like MediSave, Pioneer Generation funds, and chronic disease support are crucial but insufficient for prosthetic care.
