About this Content
Aims
To develop an automated, AI-powered clinical outcome registry for paediatric orthopaedics to improve patient monitoring, identify patients recovering poorly, and enable more efficient, improved care.
Background
Paediatric trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, yet the long-term impact of paediatric musculoskeletal injuries remains poorly understood. Traditional orthopaedic clinical outcome registries are expensive and labor-intensive.
Methods
The project involved creating a WhatsApp chatbot to collect validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) from patients on a pre-programmed, automated schedule. The registry was developed at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and involved collaboration with Bot MD.
Results
Over 313 patients have been successfully enrolled with an enrolment rate > 95%. The registry costs just $18814.2 annually, translating to over 80% cost-savings and over 1700 manpower-hours saved. Compliance rates range from 63-78%.
Conclusion
The automated, AI-powered clinical registry is cost-effective, scalable, and improves compliance rates, enabling better patient care and data collection.
Lessons Learnt
Security is key for any innovation involving patient data. Leveraging existing or verified methods of data collection will save time and energy. Early engagement of IT and Corporate Communications is essential.
