About this Content
Aims
To assess factors associated with antibiotic expectation and receipt among patients with upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) in EDs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Background
The overuse and misuse of antibiotics were contributing to antibiotic resistance, particularly among URTI patients who expected antibiotics.
Methods
Cross-sectional survey conducted across four EDs in Singapore to assess patient knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding antibiotics.
Results
Found that patients who expected antibiotics were 10.6 times more likely to receive them, with misconceptions and prior experiences influencing expectations.
Conclusion
Addressing antibiotic misuse and educating patients through mass communication channels is vital to mitigating the impact of antibiotic resistance.
Lessons Learnt
Communication about antibiotic resistance and proper use is crucial to changing patient expectations and reducing unnecessary prescriptions.
