About this Content
Aims
To ascertain the diagnostic measure of colorimeter, with radiographic examination as the reference standard, to confirm the location of nasogastric tubes in patients.
Background
Incorrect placement of nasogastric tubes can cause respiratory complications, and radiographic examination, though a gold standard, is costly and involves radiation exposure.
Methods
Prospective observational study comparing the colorimeter results to radiographic examinations for confirming nasogastric tube placement.
Results
Sensitivity: 80%, Specificity: 86.5%, Positive Predictive Value: 13.8%, Negative Predictive Value: 99.4%
Conclusion
The colorimeter cannot replace radiography as the gold standard, but it serves as a helpful screening tool for confirming tube placement.
Lessons Learnt
CO₂ detection devices may not always be reliable due to factors like tube blockage. The colorimeter showed potential as an additional screening tool.
