Aims
To offer cost-effective community-based eye screenings and reduce hospital referrals
Background
Community eye screenings were infrequent and labor-intensive. Many patients with eye conditions lacked follow-up care and were referred to specialists unnecessarily
Methods
Implemented first-level community screenings and second-level consultations with trained nurses and optometrists. Reduced hospital referrals and costs through trans-disciplinary collaboration
Results
590 community residents diagnosed with eye conditions, with 41% referred to secondary consultations. The project saved costs by reducing specialist referrals and hospitalizations
Conclusion
Reduced healthcare costs and improved accessibility of eye care in the community. The program will continue with new funding sources
Lessons Learnt
Training nurses as ophthalmologist extenders and using community wellness centers proved effective in expanding access to care and reducing burden on hospitals
