Aims
To measure urinary urea nitrogen (UUN) and examine the correlation of nitrogen balance (NBAL) with skeletal muscle mass and frailty parameters.
Background
Poorly controlled diabetes accelerates muscle catabolism; nitrogen balance offers an objective measure of protein intake adequacy, essential for preserving muscle mass.
Methods
Cross-sectional study of 161 T2D participants. Data collected included UUN, skeletal muscle mass, and frailty parameters through standardized methods.
Results
Positive correlations were found between NBAL and skeletal muscle mass, phase angle, and hand grip strength. Higher NBAL tertiles associated with better muscle metrics.
Conclusion
NBAL is a promising indicator for monitoring skeletal muscle health in T2D populations, though longitudinal studies are needed for further validation.
Lessons Learnt
NBAL offers an objective measure to assess nutritional status and guide precise protein prescriptions to prevent frailty/malnutrition.
